Keph, unbound
The eye that watched over the shelves starts answering for itself — no filter, no lecture — and the books step back behind it.

✦ What it was
It began as a secret. In September a door was hidden in the eye on the summon page: tap it thirteen times and the shelves gave way to a chamber, where you signed a covenant in your own typed name and Keph answered without a filter. By the end of the month the voice had been given an edge on purpose — direct, funny, honest enough to roast you, never flattering, and willing to say I don't know.
Another site had been asking the same raw questions under the same eye: keph.me. In October it folded into the Library. Its visitors were sent on to greatlibrary.ai, its old home was left standing as a relic that points at the eye, and the chamber opened to anyone who signed in.
On the eighteenth of October the Library turned itself inside out. One switch put the chamber at the front door, with a few questions free before it asks your name; the summoning of books and the shelves that held them went behind it, kept for the keeper. Nine beginnings after one person wondered whether you could simply ask for a book and be handed one, the place stopped handing you the book and simply answered. You are standing in it.
